Question by Mady Jo: What's the difference between a normal, one-person kayak and a sea kayak? (Apart from obvious appearance)?
I've only ever seen and used the regular (one-person) kayaks, and I have the option of renting either a one-person or sea kayak this summer. What's the difference in stability / comfort / speed / difficulty? Which one do you prefer, and why?

Comfort: same

Difficulty: same, if the sea kayak has a rudder it will track straighter.

Speed: the sea kayak will be a little better on straight line speed because it is longer and thinner

Stability: depending on the comparisons of boats the wider, and/or flatter boat will be more stable, but you can make those direct comparisons

Preference is based on use. If I am on big water and want to go long and straight it is the sea kayak. If I am in a lake where I want to duck around islands and make a lot of turns I take a shorter, easier to turn kayak.
